Surfside, a rapidly growing brand in the ready-to-drink (RTD) alcohol market, has carved a unique niche with its iced tea and lemonade vodka beverages. Unlike the proliferation of hard seltzers dominating the RTD scene, Surfside focuses on non-carbonated, low-calorie drinks that appeal to consumers seeking flavorful alternatives to beer and traditional cocktails. Since its launch in early 2022, the brand has achieved remarkable growth, driven by its distinctive product offering, which features only 100 calories, two grams of sugar, and no bubbles per 12-ounce can.
The Philadelphia-based company behind Surfside began as part of Stateside Vodka, a distillery and cocktail lounge, initially producing vodka-soda beverages. However, the founders recognized a gap in the market for non-sparkling, fruit-flavored RTDs. Clement Pappas, CEO of Surfside, explained that the product needed to deliver great taste while remaining light and refreshing, avoiding the bloating effects of carbonation. This strategy proved highly effective, leading to explosive growth: from 200,000 cases in 2022 to 1.3 million cases in 2023, marking a 563% increase in just one year.
Surfside has continued to expand its national presence, introducing new flavors to attract a wider audience. For summer, the brand launched Raspberry Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, Black Cherry Lemonade, Raspberry Iced Tea, and Green Tea. These additions complement existing offerings, all canned at 4.5% ABV and priced around $11 per 4-pack. The company has also developed green tea extensions for 2025, including Mango Green Tea, Peach Green Tea, and a Half & Half Green Tea and Vodka option, available in 4-packs, 8-pack variety sets, and a larger 700ml single can designed for stadiums and convenience stores.
The brand’s rapid expansion is not limited to flavor innovation. Surfside has strategically built its distribution network, initially focusing on the Northeast and gradually extending nationwide. By the end of 2024, the company reported just under five million case depletions and aims to double that number in 2025. Surfside has also established lifestyle and sports partnerships, becoming the official RTD Vodka Iced Tea and Vodka Lemonade for multiple professional teams, including partnerships with Minor League Baseball and 11 teams across MLB, NHL, and NBA.
Surfside’s success is further bolstered by its positioning in a still-nascent category of spirits-based RTDs. While malt-based RTDs maintain significant market share by volume, spirits-based offerings are expanding rapidly, capturing the interest of consumers seeking premium, ready-to-drink cocktails. The company sees established brands like High Noon as a model for growth and anticipates continued momentum as it introduces innovative packaging and flavors, including resealable 24-ounce cans that meet revised regulatory standards.
The combination of quality ingredients, thoughtful branding, and strategic marketing has allowed Surfside to gain a devoted following. By focusing on natural flavors, real tea, and vodka, the brand continues to attract new consumers while providing a refreshing, modern alternative in the competitive RTD space. With its green tea line and larger format cans, Surfside is poised to maintain its position as one of the fastest-growing spirit-based RTD brands in the United States.
